The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued an urgent directive for all public school teachers in Oriire Local Government Area to cease duties and remain away from school premises. This order comes in response to the recent abduction of 39 students and seven educators from various schools within the area, who remain in captivity as of Tuesday.
The directive, effective from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and continuing indefinitely, was announced by the union’s state secretary, Salami Olukayode. He expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a tragic event that has profoundly affected the teaching community. The decision was made on the firm instruction of the national leadership of the NUT, reflecting the union’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its members.
In a statement, Olukayode emphasized that the abduction has left a lasting scar on teachers, prompting the union to take this drastic step. He noted that the national executive body has mandated that all teachers in Oriire LG stay away from schools until further notice, underscoring the gravity of the security situation.
