Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has opened up about a deeply moving moment he shared with his squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. In a candid revelation, he described how the players rallied around him after Nigeria failed to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Malian tactician spoke following the Super Eagles’ 2-0 Unity Cup triumph over Zimbabwe in London on Tuesday. Reflecting on the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup, he highlighted the team’s determination to restore national pride during the AFCON tournament hosted in Morocco.
Nigeria eventually finished third in the continental championship after edging past Egypt via penalties in the bronze-medal match. Chelle acknowledged the immense pressure both he and the players faced following the World Cup qualifying failure.
He recalled a heartfelt conversation where the players promised unwavering loyalty. ‘At this point, I have never won a trophy. These players took my hand and said, Coach, we are together. We are ready to die with you. If something happens, we go together. If we win, we win together. If we lose, we lose together,’ Chelle recounted.
The manager expressed deep gratitude for the trust the squad placed in him, noting that their unity helped the team cope with the high expectations throughout the tournament. ‘I am extremely grateful for the trust they have placed in me. You can see that they endure a lot of pressure during the AFCON and the reality of the situation,’ he added.
