Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, widely known as Portable, has opened up about the reluctance of local celebrities to address the country’s security challenges. In a recent video, he responded to British-Nigerian rapper Skepta’s call for Nigerian stars to speak out against rising insecurity and economic hardship.
Portable admitted that he cannot openly condemn the insecurity because he fears arrest by the authorities. He argued that celebrities based in Nigeria are at greater risk, unlike those abroad who can criticize the government without immediate repercussions. According to him, speaking out could lead to persecution, including the seizure of passports.
He said, “Skepta, God bless you for remembering and speaking for Nigeria. But do you want the government to lock us up? They will arrest us if we talk. This administration is oppressing us. Some of us are still being punished for past comments. We need help, not just prayers. Nigerians in the diaspora can speak because they can’t be arrested from overseas. Those of us here will face serious trouble if we say what we shouldn’t.”
Portable added that his priority now is earning a living and improving his own situation, not because he doesn’t care about the country, but because speaking up could lead to persecution. He expressed hope for support from the diaspora, noting that many celebrities are tired of the situation but afraid to voice their concerns.
