Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has identified an ideal addition for the Blues as they prepare for the Xabi Alonso era. Speaking to Ladbrokes, the Italian tactician expressed admiration for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, describing him as a “class player” who would bring quality to Stamford Bridge.
Di Matteo acknowledged that Chelsea already possess a wealth of midfield talent, including Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and Romeo Lavia. He noted that a move for Tonali might only be feasible if one of those players departs. “I’m not sure whether Chelsea needs another player in that particular department. It would depend on someone leaving,” he said.
The former Chelsea boss emphasized that Tonali’s age and skill make him an attractive proposition. “He is a good age, too,” Di Matteo added. However, he cautioned that the club’s primary focus in the upcoming transfer window should be on strengthening other areas of the pitch.
Xabi Alonso, who will officially take over as Chelsea’s head coach on July 1, has already visited the club’s Cobham training complex. He is expected to oversee squad reinforcements ahead of the new season. While Tonali remains a tantalizing prospect, Di Matteo’s advice suggests that Chelsea’s recruitment priorities should lie elsewhere.
