Arsenal Win Race for Highly Rated Young Goalkeeper Phoenix Blayney

Arsenal have emerged victorious in the battle to sign one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the UK and Ireland. The Gunners have reached an agreement with Northern Irish club Larne for the transfer of 16-year-old Phoenix Blayney, beating out competition from Premier League rivals including Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Blayney’s father, Alan, confirmed the news, stating that his son is set to join Arsenal this summer following a successful trial period with the north London side. The deal will see Larne receive a small compensation fee for the player’s development, with the teenager expected to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 in November 2027.

According to Alan Blayney, the move to Arsenal was the most attractive option for his son, describing it as “the shining light among all options.” Phoenix felt a strong connection with the club and its coaching staff, which played a key role in his decision. Additionally, the presence of his close friend Daniel McCarron, who has also joined Arsenal, made the opportunity even more appealing.

Blayney will initially join the U18 squad under the guidance of head coach Adam Birchall, who took over from Jack Wilshere in October 2024. Given his age, the young goalkeeper will focus on developing his skills in the youth ranks before potentially breaking into the first team.

“Everything has been settled with Arsenal; he merely needs to sign the contract,” Alan Blayney told the Belfast Telegraph. “When he turns 17, he will sign a professional contract. It is all agreed upon, and a pre-contract will be signed at the appropriate time.”

The acquisition of Blayney is another sign of Arsenal’s commitment to strengthening their talent pool at Hale End, following their recent success in developing young players. Despite interest from other top clubs, the Gunners managed to secure the signature of one of the most highly rated goalkeepers in his age group.
