Bruno Alves Fires Back at Cristiano Ronaldo Critics: 'They've Achieved Nothing'

Former Portugal defender Bruno Alves has launched a passionate defense of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that the veteran striker remains an eternal icon of the game. Speaking out against the mounting criticism following Ronaldo’s lackluster performance in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup, Alves asserted that only those who have accomplished more than the Al-Nassr star have the right to judge.

In a pointed Instagram post, Alves declared that true idols are not constrained by age or fleeting form. He emphasized that many of Ronaldo’s detractors have made zero meaningful contributions to football, questioning their authority to criticize a player of his stature. Alves wrote, as quoted by Goal, “Respect is due to legends who transcend time. So many people talk about the game without having given anything to it. Criticism should only come from those who achieve more than Cristiano does.” He further affirmed Portugal’s unwavering support for Ronaldo, adding, “Cristiano, we believe in you no matter what.”

The outburst comes after Ronaldo failed to register a shot on target during the Group K encounter, sparking debates over whether the 41-year-old is hindering Portugal’s campaign. Despite the backlash, Alves remains confident in Ronaldo’s ability to silence doubters, as he has done repeatedly throughout his legendary career. Portugal’s next test comes against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where Ronaldo will aim to bounce back and prove his lasting worth.
