The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State has voiced serious worry about the alarming downturn in both security and education sectors across the region. This concern was highlighted during a gathering organized by students to appreciate Senator Yakubu Lado, where the party’s state chairman, Alhaji Nura Amadi Kurfi, delivered remarks on the mounting difficulties.

According to Kurfi, the safety landscape in Katsina has experienced a notable decline over recent years, disrupting economic activities and endangering the well-being of numerous communities. He emphasized that immediate and purposeful actions are needed to address the problems in security and education, which he described as the bedrock of lasting progress.

The PDP chairman lamented that the current insecurity has stalled socio-economic growth and reversed earlier accomplishments in vital sectors. He drew a comparison with what he called the “16 prosperous years” of PDP governance in the state, asserting that the notable advancements made during that era have now been squandered.

Kurfi blamed the present administration for failing to build on those achievements, leading to what he termed a period of developmental regression. Despite the grim outlook, he expressed hope that recovery is possible, noting that the PDP’s strategy includes specific initiatives to bolster security and rejuvenate education.

In his response, Senator Lado reassured supporters that their trust would be honored, vowing to commit himself to pursuing enhanced governance for the people.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Plateau State has successfully conducted its state congress, resulting in the election of new leadership. Solomon Ndam was voted in as the new state chairman, taking over the reins of the party in the state.

The event, held in Jos, the state capital, brought together delegates, stakeholders, and party supporters from various local government areas to participate in the electoral process.

Ndam expressed optimism about the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing a surge in support and membership. According to him, the NDC has registered over 250,000 new members in a short span, reflecting growing confidence in the party.

Other stakeholders at the congress called for unity and cooperation among party members to build a stronger opposition platform. The event concluded with a commitment from the newly elected executives to deepen grassroots engagement and expand the party’s footprint across Plateau State.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has asserted his authority to handpick his successor, affirming that he will unveil the chosen candidate within seven days. Speaking in Yola to members of the All Progressives Congress, the governor emphasized his commitment to ensuring a capable leader takes over in 2027.

Fintiri stressed that the decision rests solely with him, citing his role as the state’s chief executive. He promised to leverage government machinery and public support to champion his preferred candidate, whom he described as the person best suited to lead the state forward. The governor vowed to oppose anyone who poses a threat to the welfare of Adamawa residents, stating he is prepared to make personal sacrifices for the state’s progress.

While asserting his right to anoint a successor, Fintiri left the door open for other contenders, declaring that any individual confident enough to join the race is welcome. He acknowledged that a few aspirants have already purchased nomination forms and expressed openness to their participation, provided they meet the necessary standards. The governor’s remarks have sparked discussions across political circles in Adamawa as the 2027 elections draw closer.

In a bid to foster unity within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Dapo Abiodun has called on party aspirants to respect local government zoning arrangements and prioritize consensus-building ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking at a strategic meeting held in Abeokuta with aspirants for the House of Representatives and House of Assembly, alongside local government leaders, the governor emphasized that while many members are qualified to run, only one candidate can secure each position. He urged them to avoid divisive contests and instead focus on dialogue and compromise to strengthen party cohesion.

Abiodun noted that zoning arrangements across the 20 local governments are designed to promote fairness, equity, and inclusion. He stressed that grassroots leaders are best equipped to assess aspirants and recommend suitable candidates. “I am not a dictator and I have no intention of imposing candidates,” he said, adding that all decisions will be made through consultations with local stakeholders. The governor also warned that contentious primaries often lead to bitterness, financial strain, and internal divisions that could weaken the party’s electoral prospects.

To ease tensions, Abiodun promised to refund nomination form fees to aspirants who do not secure party tickets. He also assured them of compensation and future opportunities within the party, revealing that several aspirants who stepped down or aligned with party decisions have already been considered for government appointments. This move, he explained, is aimed at retaining experienced members and discouraging anti-party activities.

Drawing from his own political journey, the governor urged aspirants to remain patient and committed. “I started contesting in 1993 and only became governor in 2019. If you don’t get it today, you may get it tomorrow,” he said. He maintained that the incentives are not meant to induce loyalty but to appreciate commitment and strengthen internal cohesion.

Party elders, including Kola Ogunjobi, Olu Agemo, Adekunle Adesina, Gbenga Kaka, and Iyabo Apampa, commended the initiative, describing it as a pragmatic approach to managing internal competition and rewarding loyalty. Observers suggest that this strategy underscores the APC’s effort in Ogun State to manage internal contestation through consultation, consensus, and strategic appointments as it seeks to maintain unity ahead of the elections.

The Deputy Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Oladimeji Fabiyi, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of being self-centered and not a genuine leader who fights for the masses. Fabiyi made these remarks while appearing on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program, which was monitored by our correspondent on Tuesday.
