The Lagos State Government has announced that its Intelligent Transport System (ITS) has identified more than 737,000 traffic infractions since implementation. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety, streamline traffic flow, and advance digital governance across Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, revealed the figures during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa on Wednesday. The event marked the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

Alake emphasized the government’s dedication to leveraging innovation, science, and technology to fortify governance, elevate public service delivery, and transform Lagos into Africa’s premier smart city.

He highlighted ongoing progress in digital governance, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, science education, enterprise architecture, and smart city projects. Under the Safe City initiative, Lagos has bolstered digital surveillance and traffic enforcement systems across key locations throughout the state.

The commissioner noted that these measures have led to improved traffic compliance, safer roads, and more effective security management. “The Intelligent Transport System has recorded over 737,000 traffic violations to date, contributing to safer roads and better traffic behaviour across Lagos,” Alake stated.

Additionally, the Ministry has made substantial strides in digitizing government operations through the Enterprise Architecture initiative. Out of 211 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), 192 have been evaluated, and 232 application workloads have been documented. This standardization aims to minimize IT project expenses and boost operational efficiency.

Alake also highlighted the growing adoption of digital government services via the Lagos State Digital Service Platform, which now attracts over 250,000 monthly visitors.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Taraba State, Abubakar Bawa, has highlighted the pivotal role that local government chairmen play in translating government policies into tangible benefits for citizens at the grassroots level.

Speaking during a strategic gathering with all 16 local government council chairmen in Jalingo on Wednesday, Bawa emphasized the importance of collaboration and party coordination to enhance governance across the state.

According to Bawa, local government chairmen are the closest administrative link to the people, making them essential in executing state government initiatives and driving development within their jurisdictions.

He called on the council leaders to actively promote party activities at the ward level and maintain strong cooperation with party structures throughout their local government areas.

Bawa also underscored the need for unity and dedication among all party stakeholders to ensure effective governance and lasting political stability in Taraba.

Responding on behalf of the council chairmen, Moses Maihankali, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Taraba and Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Council, expressed appreciation for the APC leadership’s inclusive approach and commitment to involving local government officials in decision-making processes.

Maihankali assured the party leadership of the council chairmen’s unwavering loyalty, cooperation, and full support for the state government and the APC in advancing developmental programmes across the state.

In a fiery reaction to recent allegations, businessman and activist Isaac Fayose has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) over claims that N800 billion was diverted from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). According to Fayose, such mismanagement of public funds is the primary reason many states remain underdeveloped.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused President Bola Tinubu and APC governors of siphoning over N800 billion from FAAC, purportedly to fund Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign. The opposition party claims this diversion led to a rift within the Progressive Governors Forum.

Reacting via a video on his Facebook page, Fayose called on Nigerians to be vigilant and vote out the APC in the next election. He said, “They are using your own money to buy your votes with rice and envelopes. 32 APC governors allegedly pooled N800 billion for Tinubu’s re-election. That is why your state is underdeveloped. If APC returns, things will only worsen.”

Fayose warned that allowing the APC to remain in power would further impoverish the nation. He urged citizens to wake up and take action before the 2027 polls, emphasizing that the alleged theft of public funds is a direct assault on development and the well-being of Nigerians.

The Enugu State Working Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to take legal action if the party’s National Executive Committee does not promptly approve congresses held across all wards, local government areas, and the state. The congresses, culminating in the state-level event on May 4, 2026, elected Dr. Johnpaul Ani as chairman and Dr. Sebastine Okafor as secretary.

Despite the Congress Committee Secretary, Engr. Echezona Ogbanufe, submitting a report confirming that the exercises were conducted successfully, the National Secretariat has allegedly delayed ratification. In a pre-action letter from their counsel, Stanley C. Nwankwo, Esq., of the Chambers of Oba Maduabuchi, SAN, the newly elected officials demand immediate recognition or face a lawsuit. The letter, titled “Report of Unconstitutional Conduct by the National Secretariat of Nigeria Democratic Congress,” was addressed to the National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, and copied to party leaders Seriake Dickson and Peter Obi.

According to the petitioners, the congresses followed the party’s schedule and were observed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Department of State Services (DSS). They claim the National Secretariat is planning a fresh congress in Enugu, which would violate the party’s constitution. Specifically, they cite Article 12.7, which states that the former protem leadership ceases to exist once new executives emerge.

The group also alleges that Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta threatened party members, including the South-East Zonal Vice Chairman, Chief Teddy Odeh, and attempted to deploy security forces to disrupt party activities. They note that the party’s visibility in Enugu has grown since the congresses, and the National Secretariat has not publicly disavowed the outcomes.

The petition further accuses the National Secretary of trying to undermine the newly elected executives, particularly after former African Democratic Congress (ADC) members joined the NDC following the defection of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. “Had His Excellency Peter Obi and His Excellency Rabiu Kwankwaso not joined the party, would these persons come anywhere close to the NDC?” the petition asks, highlighting concerns over internal sabotage. The officials warn that canceling the congress would breach the constitution and have serious repercussions beyond internal party affairs.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has called on northern Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027. He described such support as a matter of justice and reciprocity.

Doguwa, who also heads the Northern Caucus in the House, argued that the region has a duty to back Tinubu because the South assisted the North in securing former President Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms. He emphasized that voting for Tinubu would be a fair and honest act, mirroring the South’s earlier solidarity.

In a statement released in Kano, the lawmaker appealed to his constituents in Tudun Wada/Doguwa who had left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return. He promised renewed development and urged unity, saying he holds no grudges and views everyone as family.

Doguwa also praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his peaceful leadership and called on APC members and defectors to work together. He expressed pride in all party members and stressed the importance of collective effort for the party’s progress.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has screened a total of 45 candidates for the upcoming state and National Assembly primary elections scheduled for May 21 in Cross River State. This information was confirmed by the party’s secretary in the state, Mr. Joe Bisong, during a media briefing in Calabar on Wednesday.

According to Bisong, a five-member screening panel led by Fred Osim assessed 33 aspirants vying for positions in the House of Assembly. Additionally, three candidates were screened for the Senate, and nine others for the House of Representatives.

The party secretary expressed confidence that the PDP’s prospects are bright, citing what he described as the poor performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in governance. He emphasized that the PDP remains the only political party capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, noting that the party has a proven track record of trustworthiness.

“Since 2015, Nigerians have witnessed the APC’s performance, and they will make their choice in the 2027 elections,” Bisong stated. He further asserted that the PDP has the necessary following and support to emerge victorious at all electoral levels.

In a decisive move ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has approved the candidacy of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Dennis Guwor, along with 45 other hopefuls for the upcoming assembly primary elections. This announcement came after a rigorous two-day vetting process at the party’s secretariat in Asaba.

The screening committee, chaired by Dr. Uche Uzochukwu with Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor as secretary, released its findings in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. A total of 82 aspirants presented themselves before the panel, but only 46 satisfied all requirements after thorough verification of their credentials and eligibility.

Guwor stood out as the sole aspirant cleared for the Warri South-West constituency. Among the successful candidates are 17 current lawmakers of the eighth assembly seeking re-election, as well as three former commissioners: Funyei Manager (Bomadi), Harry Trakirlowei (Patani), and Orode Uduaghan (Warri North).

However, the committee disqualified 36 aspirants for various infractions, including attempts to bribe panel members, submission of unsworn affidavits, failure to present Permanent Voter Cards, and lack of valid APC membership slips. Other reasons included discrepancies in birth dates, name variations in official documents, unpaid party dues, irregular membership numbers, and insufficient ward nominators.

The committee also highlighted violations of zoning agreements in some constituencies, warning that such actions could jeopardize the party’s performance in the 2027 polls. Some aspirants were further faulted for not resigning from political appointments as mandated by the Electoral Act, while others submitted multiple or invalid affidavits that failed to properly disclose relevant facts.

Emphasizing transparency, the committee stated that its work was guided strictly by APC rules and the Electoral Act. “We carried out our duties fairly, diligently, and with utmost commitment to the party’s integrity,” the statement read. “Only those who met constitutional and procedural requirements were cleared.”

The screening aimed to bolster internal democracy within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. The committee congratulated those who made the cut and encouraged disqualified aspirants to view the decision as non-final, noting that they could appeal through the party’s Screening Appeal Committee.

Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has emphasized that election outcomes should be determined at the polling stations rather than through extended judicial processes. Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, Tanko—who is a close associate of former presidential contender Peter Obi—highlighted the increasing reliance on court rulings to settle electoral disputes and its detrimental effect on Nigeria’s democratic system.

According to Tanko, elections must accurately represent the genuine choices of voters at the grassroots level. He cautioned that the habit of depending on court decisions for electoral matters could erode public trust in the voting process. Tanko stated, “We don’t want to allow any situation that forces us to go to court. Elections should be finalized at the polling units. Let us close this matter conclusively, identify the winner, and proceed without delay.”

He argued that the current trend of taking electoral disputes to court undermines the integrity of the electoral process and prolongs uncertainty. Tanko’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about electoral reforms in Nigeria, with many civil society groups and political actors advocating for mechanisms that ensure transparency and finality at the polling stage.

In a significant move ahead of the 2027 general elections, several prominent Nigerians have picked up expression of interest and nomination forms from the Labour Party (LP). Among them are former Information Minister Labaran Maku, former Senator Ishaku Abbo, Emmanuel Ben, Adamu Bako Blanzou, and Jesse James Ayenajeh. They are seeking to contest various elective positions under the party’s banner.

Maku is targeting the Nasarawa North Senatorial District seat, while Abbo is eyeing the Adamawa State governorship. Emmanuel Ben has set his sights on the Akwa Ibom governorship, and Blanzou is vying for the House of Representatives seat representing Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency. Ayenajeh, a former lawmaker, is also aiming for the House of Representatives, this time for the Toto Federal Constituency in Nasarawa State.

The aspirants, hailing from both northern and southern regions, converged at the party’s secretariat to secure their nomination documents. Speaking to journalists after obtaining his forms, Maku expressed strong optimism about the Labour Party’s prospects. He noted that the party has earned the trust of Nigerians and is poised to win from the presidency down to the state level. According to him, the LP has become a household name in many states, particularly in Nasarawa, where supporters are determined to ensure victory in the upcoming senatorial and other polls.

Similarly, Abbo commended the growing momentum of the Labour Party and praised National Chairman Nenadi Usman for revitalizing the party. He expressed confidence in the party’s chances across Adamawa State and the broader North-East region, citing the leadership’s efforts to reposition the party for success.

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Taminu Turaki has made changes to the timeline originally set for its primary elections. This adjustment, announced on Wednesday, comes after numerous requests from party members and candidates nationwide.

In a statement released by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan, the party explained that the revision was necessary to accommodate the appeals received.

The updated schedule now includes the following key dates: the sale of nomination forms will close on May 15, 2026. Completed forms must be submitted by May 18, 2026. The screening of aspirants is set for May 19, 2026. While candidates for national and state legislative positions will be screened in their respective states, those vying for gubernatorial and presidential offices will undergo screening in Abuja. The party confirmed that all other activities will proceed as initially announced.
