The Independent National Electoral Commission has expanded its leadership team with the addition of a newly appointed National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (retired), following her official swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan welcomed the new commissioner, noting that her arrival comes at a critical time as the commission ramps up preparations for future electoral events. He emphasized that the appointment is both timely and strategically significant given the current phase of INEC’s electoral schedule.

In a statement published on INEC Nigeria’s X account, Amupitan highlighted that the commissioner’s appointment fills a vacancy in the North-East geopolitical zone that had remained open for more than a year. Restoring full representation in that region, he argued, will enhance the commission’s decision-making capabilities as it gears up for upcoming polls.

Amupitan also praised Malafa’s professional credentials, pointing out that her background in legal practice, military service, and logistics management will be valuable assets in areas such as election planning, security coordination, and the resolution of electoral disputes.

The INEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to its constitutional duties, stating that it remains resolute despite various obstacles. He revealed that preparations are already in motion for several electoral exercises, including by-elections and other scheduled ballots leading up to the 2027 general elections.

“These off-cycle elections will serve as important benchmarks in assessing and strengthening the commission’s operational readiness,” Amupitan said. He explained that the lessons learned from these exercises will aid INEC in preparing for the presidential and National Assembly elections slated for January 2027, as well as the governorship and state assembly elections expected in February 2027.

Amupitan urged the new commissioner to take an active role in the commission’s activities, collaborate with colleagues, and leverage the institution’s accumulated experience to help deliver credible, transparent, and inclusive elections throughout Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has offered his perspective on the recent Supreme Court ruling. He characterizes the decision as a powerful endorsement of the party’s leadership structure.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict effectively resolves the leadership disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), affirming that the party remains united and faction-free.

Speaking to the press at his residence in Abuja, Wike dismissed any claims of division, emphasizing that the court’s decision has brought much-needed clarity to the party’s internal conflicts. According to Wike, the ruling underscores that the PDP is a single, cohesive entity without any splinter groups.

He specifically noted that the Supreme Court’s 3-2 decision invalidated the party’s national convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025. That convention had sought to establish a leadership faction backed by Seyi Makinde. The court determined that the convention violated prior court orders, which mandated specific procedural steps before any such gathering could be held. The ruling also criticized the PDP for proceeding with the convention despite explicit directives to halt.

Offering a broader perspective on the political landscape, Wike drew a clear line between political parties and individuals. He expressed that while he holds the PDP in high regard, he harbors strong reservations about certain individuals within the party. “My dislike is not for the party itself but for some people involved,” he stated. “These are individuals who, in my view, have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s challenges.”

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has officially set up a consensus committee within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to align the interests of various aspirants before the upcoming party primaries. The committee was inaugurated on Thursday, with the governor emphasizing the need for internal harmony.

During the inauguration, Idris explained that the committee’s primary role is to engage with all party members who have obtained nomination forms for different elective positions, aiming to reach a consensus wherever feasible. He noted that this initiative reflects the party’s dedication to internal cohesion and highlighted that both consensus building and direct primaries are acceptable methods for candidate selection under current electoral laws.

The governor expressed optimism that the APC in Kebbi State would handle its internal affairs effectively, citing the party’s history of discipline and unity. He urged committee members to reconcile aspirants, settle disputes, and ensure a smooth and acceptable process that would strengthen the party for the forthcoming elections.

The consensus committee is chaired by Ambassador Saidu Nasamu Dakingari and includes prominent figures such as Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu Jarma, APC National Organising Secretary Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, APC State Chairman Alhaji Abubakar Gari Mallam, and other senior party and government officials. Additional members are Umar Idris Buro (Chief of Staff), retired Justice Suleiman Muhammad Ambursa, and Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, who will serve as secretary.

In his response, committee chairman Dakingari expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them by the governor and pledged to execute their duties with fairness and transparency. He assured that the committee would prioritize the party’s interests and work towards a credible consensus process.

This development occurs as the APC ramps up preparations for its primaries in advance of the 2027 general elections.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a firm declaration that it remains unbowed and resolute in its mission to secure governance in Nigeria, following the Supreme Court’s latest decision.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, responded to the apex court’s ruling that validated the leadership structure led by Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

Abdullahi emphasized that the judgment unequivocally confirms the legitimacy of the party’s current leadership under Mark and Aregbesola.

In a statement released to the press, he expressed gratitude to the five-member Supreme Court panel for their unanimous verdict, which he described as a credit to the nation’s judiciary and political framework.

However, Abdullahi cautioned that the party does not view this victory as the conclusion of its struggles. He noted that the events leading to the ruling revealed a disturbing pattern of external interference, bad faith, and efforts to suppress opposition voices within the country.

The recent reports linking a young man discovered dead in Emure-Ile, Owo Local Government Area, to Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), have been refuted by the institution’s management.

An official statement released on Thursday by Olumide Olugosi, the Senior Assistant Registrar for Public Relations and Protocol, clarified that the deceased, Audi Emmanuel, was never enrolled at the polytechnic, contrary to earlier media claims.

The management expressed condolences to the family of the deceased but stressed the importance of correcting inaccurate information circulating in the public domain.

It was further revealed that after a thorough check of academic records, no student with the name Audi Emmanuel was found in any department, including Computer Engineering Technology and the Continuing Education Centre. Although a person with a similar name, Audu Emmanuel, was offered admission into the Computer Science National Diploma program for the 2024/2025 session, the individual did not complete the admission process or take any examinations, and therefore cannot be considered a registered student.

The institution urged media practitioners and the public to verify facts before publishing sensitive information, especially when it involves identity issues. The management also reiterated its sympathy for the bereaved family while distancing itself from the erroneous reports.

The Ogun State Government has introduced a new circular economy approach aimed at turning electronic waste into economic opportunities. This strategy focuses on generating employment, safeguarding the environment, and promoting industrial sustainability. Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasized that the well-being of chemical handlers remains a top priority, stressing that industrial progress must go hand in hand with environmental stewardship.

Speaking at the 4th OGEPA Capacity Building Workshop in Abeokuta, themed “Transforming E-Waste into Opportunity: Circular Economy Solutions for Ogun State,” the governor, represented by Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya, declared that the state will no longer permit informal handling of hazardous waste. He cited data indicating that Nigeria produces over 500,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, warning that improper disposal releases dangerous substances like lead and mercury, posing serious health hazards.

Governor Abiodun specifically addressed chemical handlers and workers involved in e-waste processing. He said, “Your safety is non-negotiable. You are exposed daily to lead from cathode ray tubes, mercury in flat-screen backlights, cadmium in batteries, and brominated flame retardants in plastics. Improper handling leads to respiratory diseases, neurological damage, and chronic poisoning. We are committed to providing you with proper Personal Protective Equipment, training in safe dismantling, and access to formal processing channels that protect your health while preserving your livelihood.”

The governor also called on participants to develop a concrete e-waste roadmap, establish a multi-sector task force, and secure binding commitments from industry stakeholders. Commissioner for Environment, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Kafayat Lawal, noted that the workshop aims to advance a draft E-waste and Circular Economy Roadmap for Ogun State and to set up a multi-sectoral task force for its implementation.

Dr. Innocent Barikor, Director-General of NESREA, described the theme as a paradigm shift that encourages viewing e-waste not merely as an environmental burden but as a resource within a sustainable economic framework. OGEPA General Manager Kehinde Bello highlighted that the workshop seeks to create a structured, safe, and forward-looking framework for e-waste management, emphasizing that regulation alone is insufficient and that collaboration, knowledge sharing, and best practices are essential, especially in safe chemical handling during recycling.

A major highlight was the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding among OGEPA, E-Terra Technologies Ltd., and the E-Waste Relief Foundation, marking a significant step toward formalizing e-waste management in the state.

Traditional leaders from the Federal Capital Territory have bestowed upon Minister Nyesom Wike the chieftaincy title Hasken Abuja, meaning the Light of Abuja, in appreciation of his transformative work in the region. During a gathering at the Federal Capital Development Authority Conference Hall in Abuja, the Council of Chiefs expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for advancing infrastructure, particularly in satellite towns, while also calling for greater recognition of the territory’s indigenous communities.

The Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, Dr. Adamu Baba Yunusa, highlighted the minister’s visionary leadership and commitment, citing the approval for a new palace in Abaji, enhanced welfare for traditional rulers, and structural reforms that have uplifted the traditional institution. The chiefs presented a list of requests, including 17 tractors—one per chiefdom—to boost food security in rural areas. They also advocated for upgrading historically significant chiefdoms such as Garki and Jiwa to higher statuses.

Responding, Wike assured the stakeholders of his dedication to protecting indigenous interests. He promptly directed the Mandate Secretary for Agriculture to supply tractors to each chiefdom and asked the Council of Chiefs to submit names for the creation of third-class traditional stools. He also pledged to address land certificate issues based on submitted figures. Emphasizing his new role, Wike stated, “I’m now from here. For me to be the Light of Abuja, I must do everything to protect your interest.”

Turning to politics, Wike advised against electing weak representatives in 2027, stressing the need for a strong voice in the National Assembly to lobby for expanded senatorial seats. He criticized past representation for failing to articulate the FCT’s needs and endorsed Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda. Wike noted that despite the FCT’s low electoral support in 2023—less than six percent—President Tinubu has delivered numerous projects. He warned against repeating electoral mistakes, saying, “If you make a mistake this time, it will be difficult for you.”

Wike revealed that upcoming anniversaries would include inaugurations of water supply schemes and road networks in rural communities. He urged incoming area council chairmen to prioritize governance and education, stating, “It cannot continue that our children are at home because of strikes. Education is a first priority… without it, there cannot be development.”

Earlier, Dr. Aliyu Daniel Bakna Kwali, President of the FCT Stakeholders Assembly, commended the minister’s reforms and infrastructural advancements, while demanding increased representation for the FCT in the National Assembly and the creation of additional area councils. The event marked a new era of collaborative governance, with traditional institutions positioned as key drivers of political and economic expansion.

The Nigerian military achieved significant victories in April, eliminating 201 terrorists and liberating 188 kidnapped individuals during coordinated security campaigns across the nation. Defence Headquarters spokesman Major General Michael Onoja announced these results on Thursday in Abuja, detailing the ongoing efforts against insurgency and criminal activities.

Under Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East, troops killed 136 insurgents, apprehended 114 suspects, and rescued 18 hostages. Additionally, nine terrorists surrendered to forces. In the North-West’s Operation Fansan Yamma, security forces accounted for 20 militant deaths, arrested 32 individuals, and freed 70 abducted civilians across various states.

The South-South region saw Operation Delta Safe dismantle illegal oil refining sites, leading to the seizure of over 101,000 litres of petroleum products and multiple arrests. Overall, 284 suspects, including logistics suppliers and collaborators, were taken into custody.

Major General Onoja emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability, noting that the operations reflect sustained pressure on criminal networks. Enclaves have been destroyed, and several insurgents have surrendered, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated strategies.
