The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has asserted that the recent Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the Accord Party places Governor Ademola Adeleke’s bid for a second term under serious threat. This comes ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Oluremi Omowaiye, head of the party’s media and publicity committee, the APC campaign council noted that the court’s decision, which also instructs the Independent National Electoral Commission to take appropriate action, holds major consequences for the governor.

The APC expressed its confidence in the judiciary and respect for constitutional processes, but argued that the ruling effectively undermines Adeleke’s candidacy under the Accord Party platform. Unless overturned by a higher court, the governor would be ineligible to contest the election as the Accord Party’s candidate, the statement read.

Beyond the governorship race, the council warned that the judgment could invalidate all candidates fielded by the party for legislative positions at both state and national levels. This development, according to the APC, represents a significant blow to the governor’s political ambitions.

Adding to the complexity, the APC highlighted ongoing legal battles over the legitimate leadership of the Accord Party. If the courts recognize a rival faction, INEC may be unable to accept Adeleke as the party’s officially nominated candidate. The governor’s political troubles, the statement claimed, originate from unresolved legal issues that existed before he joined the party.

The campaign council further alleged that Adeleke’s potential absence from the ballot would deprive voters of the chance to evaluate his administration’s performance. The APC accused the current government of causing economic hardship, failures in education and healthcare, and job losses.

Expanding on allegations of financial mismanagement, the council cited the N99.5 billion Ede Airport project, the alleged diversion of a N2 billion federal grant for buses, salary payments to ghost workers, and other questionable financial practices. It insisted that accountability would remain a pressing issue regardless of the election outcome. The statement concluded, “Even if Governor Adeleke escapes the verdict of the electorate because he is disqualified from the race, he cannot escape the long arm of justice and the inevitable demand for accountability.”

The APC urged Osun State residents to remain peaceful, vigilant, and dedicated to democratic principles as the August 15 election approaches.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate representing the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared his intention to engage in talks with various agitators across the country should he emerge victorious in the upcoming elections. The former governor emphasized that his administration would prioritize inclusive conversations over assigning blame. He specifically mentioned Sunday Igboho, a prominent Yoruba nation activist, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Islamic cleric, and leaders of the Biafran movement as individuals he would invite to the negotiating table. Obi argued that these figures are integral to the nation’s challenges and thus must be part of the solution.

Drawing from his experience as governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled how he successfully resolved disputes by convening traditional rulers and other stakeholders to foster understanding. He stated, ‘I will sit down with everyone and say, let’s go this way. I proved this approach works during my tenure.’ When pressed on the possibility that some agitators might refuse to cooperate, Obi expressed confidence in his persuasive abilities, comparing the situation to a sick person who cannot afford to ignore medical help. ‘They are part of the problem, so they will listen. How can someone who is ill refuse to come to the hospital?’ he remarked.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has halted the enforcement of a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties. The appellate court, in a unanimous ruling by a three-member panel led by Justice Abubakar Mohammed, criticized Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court for proceeding with the case despite a May 22 order to suspend proceedings.

The panel described the lower court’s action as a ‘brazen violation of the hierarchy of courts’ and ‘the highest form of judicial impertinence.’ It emphasized that a judge who acts in such a manner ‘is unfit for the bench as it amounts to judicial rascality,’ citing a Supreme Court precedent.

The appellate court stated, ‘Courts are enjoined to protect their integrity. This Court has supervisory authority over the trial court. The decision of the lower court to proceed with the judgment despite the express order of this court is a brazen violation of the hierarchy of the court and the 1999 Constitution.’ Consequently, the application for a stay of execution was granted, and the enforcement of the judgment is suspended.

The Court of Appeal has scheduled June 25 for the hearing of the substantive appeal. The deregistration order had been issued against ADC, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), based on a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL).

The High Court had ruled that these parties failed to meet constitutional requirements, including winning at least 25% of votes in a state during a presidential election or securing at least one elective seat. It barred INEC from recognizing them or accepting their candidates for the 2027 elections. However, the Appeal Court’s intervention has put the order on hold pending further review.

In a recent media interaction with Rufai Oseni, Peter Obi, the candidate representing the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections, reiterated his claim that he emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential contest. The group also raised concerns about the role of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, whose reported backing of the lawsuit has fueled suspicions about the impartiality of key democratic institutions.

According to the CNPP, this development reinforces the perception that opposition parties are being deliberately marginalized and that political institutions might be manipulated to serve partisan interests in the run-up to the 2027 elections. The CNPP insisted that Nigeria’s destiny must be shaped by voters through free, fair, and competitive elections.

A political commentator and indigene of Ebonyi State, Paschal Oluchukwu, has criticized Governor Francis Nwifuru for allegedly leveraging future power shift pledges to the Ezza clan as a campaign tool ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Oluchukwu responded to recent political activities involving endorsement and opposition rallies organized by the Ezza Elders Council in Onueke and the Umuekumenyi Leaders Council in Abakaliki.

He branded the governor’s commitment to rotate power to the Ezza-Ezekuna group in 2031 as a mere political gimmick, arguing that lack of personal attendance at the endorsement rally undermines the promise’s credibility.

“A physical presence at the so-called second-term endorsement rally in Onueke and a public pledge to hand over to an Ezza man in 2031 would have offered genuine reassurance to the people of Ezza Ezekuna,” Oluchukwu remarked.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has linked the growing insecurity in the state to the insufficient arming of the regional security outfit, Amotekun. Speaking to protesters in Ibadan on Tuesday, the governor acknowledged that the security agency lacks the necessary weapons to effectively combat criminal activities.

The protest, led by activist VeryDarkMan, demanded the safe return of over 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area. The demonstration came after weeks of rising tension and public outcry over the kidnapping incident.
