The Federal Ministry of Education has officially refuted claims that its education data management system was compromised by hackers. In a statement released on June 16, 2026, the ministry described the reports as false and misleading.

According to Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, the allegations stemmed from a misunderstanding. The ministry clarified that the NEMIS platform was never breached or hacked, and all data remains secure and accessible.

The issue arose from a temporary Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration error at the hosting level, which triggered security warnings on some users’ browsers. The ministry stressed that this was a technical glitch, not a cyberattack, and that no unauthorized access, data loss, or data alteration occurred.

Following the discovery, the ministry’s technical team collaborated with the hosting provider to resolve the issue promptly, restoring normal operations. The ministry emphasized that browser security alerts should not be automatically interpreted as evidence of a data breach.

The Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure is a key federal initiative aimed at improving education data governance, integration, and accessibility. NEMIS plays a critical role in collecting, managing, and utilizing education data. The ministry continues to implement security measures, monitor systems, and conduct periodic assessments to safeguard the platform.

Finally, the ministry urged media organizations and the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm and undermine confidence in government digital platforms. It called on stakeholders to ignore reports suggesting that NEMIS had been compromised, reiterating that such claims are baseless.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has voiced strong opposition to the recent deregistration of political parties by a Federal High Court. In a decisive move to tackle persistent security threats, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has implemented a ban on the sale of fuel in jerrycans and ordered the shutdown of all Point of Sale (POS) centres across the state. This executive order aims to cut off logistical support for bandits and kidnappers operating in the region.

The announcement came after an urgent security meeting convened by the governor, which included representatives from security agencies, traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders. The meeting focused on addressing the ongoing insecurity that has plagued several parts of the state.

Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, issued a statement on Tuesday confirming the new measures. Governor Radda explained that intelligence reports and security assessments revealed that criminal networks have been exploiting these facilities to coordinate and sustain their illicit activities. Additionally, the executive order imposes a complete ban on motorcycle use in Matazu and Musawa Local Government Areas. This restriction is designed to hinder the mobility of bandits and kidnappers, who frequently use motorcycles to launch attacks and evade security forces.

The governor emphasized that protecting lives and property remains his administration’s primary duty. He assured residents of continued collaboration with security agencies to restore lasting peace and stability throughout Katsina State. Former ADC presidential aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen has raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening security conditions and economic struggles, emphasizing that his remarks are not politically motivated. Following the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in captivity, Hayatu-Deen highlighted the nation’s fourth-place ranking on the Global Terrorism Index and a 46% rise in terrorism-related fatalities.

Max Lounge on Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, was shut down for both noise and air pollution, while The Hotel Macs on Enitan Street, Aguda, Surulere, was closed for ignoring the agency’s orders. Hotel Bel Am on Agbebi Street, Ijesha, and Fecomillion Hotel on Salami Bashorun Street, Ijesha, Surulere, were also sealed for noise pollution and non-compliance, respectively.

The enforcement sweep extended to PetroSafe Gas Station on Ijesha Road, sealed for obstructing duties and non-compliance; Serena Hotel and Suites on Ashoge Street, off Cele Bus Stop, Surulere, closed for non-compliance; CitiLounge on Mobe Street, Ishaga, sealed for noise pollution; and Gariot on Ogunlana Drive, penalized for obstruction and failure to follow environmental regulations.

He emphasized that adhering to environmental regulations is a collective duty, urging both individuals and corporations to comply strictly. The Kogi State Police Command has announced that starting July 1, 2026, all commercial motorcyclists in the state must wear reflective jackets with unique serial numbers and carry identification cards. This measure is aimed at tackling security issues and making it easier to identify riders.

This directive was revealed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, in a statement from Lokoja. The jackets will be color-coded according to the three senatorial districts: yellow for Kogi Central, blue for Kogi West, and red for Kogi East.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the rule strictly while remaining professional and respecting citizens’ rights. He also warned against any extortion or harassment of motorcyclists during enforcement.

Riders who violate the directive will be arrested and their motorcycles impounded until they comply fully. The police urge the public to take note of the serial numbers and identification details of the riders they use, as this information can aid security agencies in investigations.

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s presidential hopeful from the 2023 elections, has asserted that Nigeria has not achieved true democracy. According to Adebayo, uninterrupted civilian governance since 1999 does not equate to a robust democracy. The All Progressives Congress has made a bold declaration that the Peoples Democratic Party will have no foothold in Ebonyi State during the 2027 general elections.
