A Bauchi-based social critic, David Adenuga, has appealed to former President Goodluck Jonathan to resist the mounting pressure to re-enter the presidential contest, cautioning that those urging him to run may have hidden agendas that could ruin his hard-earned reputation.

In his open letter addressed to Jonathan, Adenuga expressed admiration for the former leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process and implored him to prioritize national interests over partisan maneuvers. He stressed that the former president should steer clear of being exploited by ambitious politicians whose motives are self-serving rather than patriotic.

Adenuga noted that the same individuals now championing Jonathan’s comeback were once his fiercest critics during his tenure in office. He warned that these elements could stain Jonathan’s clean image with their corrupt practices and called the situation a game of political chess where Jonathan might be used as a pawn.

He reminded Jonathan that his legacy is anchored in the peaceful transfer of power in 2015 when he conceded defeat despite a tense political environment. This act, Adenuga argued, cemented Jonathan’s place in history, and risking it for a few politicians’ desperation would be unwise.

The commentator also accused some of Jonathan’s current supporters of having lost public trust, saying their damaged reputations should not be allowed to taint Jonathan’s goodwill. He urged the former president to rise above political scheming and safeguard his historical standing.

Meanwhile, it is worth recalling that the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had recently nominated Jonathan as its presidential candidate during a special convention in Abuja, setting the stage for a potential 2027 run.

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has officially approved former Cross River State governor Donald Duke as its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general elections. This decision was made by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) following a thorough review of the primary elections report submitted by the Primaries Appeal Committee.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, the NWC also ratified the results of primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions. Ishaq confirmed that all candidates whose names were forwarded have been cleared to contest, with the exception of the Tarauni Federal Constituency in Kano State, where the primary election was annulled.

He further disclosed that the PRP intends to field approximately 420 candidates across various positions in the upcoming 2027 polls. Ishaq emphasized, “In line with our dedication to being actively involved in the election process, the PRP is proud to have 420 candidates running for all the positions in the 2027 general elections.”

The party reiterated its commitment to internal democracy, selfless service, and the delivery of credible, transformative leadership for Nigeria.

Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, a Labour Party candidate for the House of Representatives in the 2027 elections, has forecast a dramatic transformation in Nigeria’s political landscape, describing Peter Obi as an unpredictable factor that could upend traditional electoral calculations. In a social media analysis, Ezeh highlighted the potential for non-linear disruptions stemming from internal opposition tensions, possible defections, and strategic alliances that might catch established parties off guard.

Instead of leaving his party, Obi might pursue a unique presidential bid with former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate. According to Ezeh, this unconventional ticket could minimize internal party conflicts and reshape voter engagement, especially in the South-East, where dissatisfaction with recent primaries persists. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has accused Peter Obi and his Obidient movement of attempting a blatant rewriting of history concerning security during Obi’s tenure as Anambra State governor.

According to Onanuga, if questioned about the security situation in Anambra under his leadership, Obi and his supporters would engage in a clear act of historical distortion. He emphasized that the internet retains records, and Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano, is still present to confirm the facts.

Onanuga’s comments align with Obiano’s earlier statement that Obi handed over a state devoid of security. Obiano claimed that over 69 individuals were kidnapped during Obi’s administration, leading to indigenes avoiding returning to Anambra.

Peter Obi governed Anambra State from March 17, 2006, to March 17, 2014, with temporary interruptions due to legal challenges. His first term was cut short by impeachment on November 2, 2006, but he was reinstated on February 9, 2007, and served until May 29, 2007. A Supreme Court ruling on June 14, 2007, returned him to office, and he completed his first term on March 17, 2010. His second term ran from March 17, 2010, to March 17, 2014.

The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the recent statements made by the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Sunday Fagbemi. Speaking on TVC, Fagbemi had lauded the performance of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, which the PDP described as a transparent effort to polish Abdullah’s administration’s failings before the 2027 elections.

In a release from Ilorin on Friday, the PDP’s Assistant Publicity Secretary, Bashir Ashura, expressed dismay that Fagbemi opted for propaganda when many Kwarans are suffering from insecurity, economic hardship, joblessness, poor healthcare, and a declining quality of life. The opposition party noted that before AbdulRazaq took office in 2019, Kwara was known as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states. Now, areas like Baruten, Kaiama, Edu, Patigi, and Ifelodun are frequent targets for kidnappings and bandit attacks. Families can no longer sleep peacefully as they used to.

The PDP said labeling the security crisis as “artificial” is insensitive and disrespectful to the victims of violence. They added that the pain of those affected cannot be dismissed as mere election-season rhetoric. Furthermore, the party pointed out that Fagbemi boasted about governance achievements without addressing accountability. According to government records, Kwara’s IGR jumped from about ₦30.6 billion in 2019 to over ₦69 billion in 2024, while federal allocations also rose after fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate changes. Yet, ordinary Kwarans see no corresponding improvements in security, healthcare, education, job creation, or rural development.

The PDP argued that instead of being transparent about how public funds are used, the AbdulRazaq administration has shrouded itself in secrecy, intimidating journalists and social commentators who demand accountability. They dismissed Fagbemi’s claim that every ward in Kwara has a functional health center as a gross exaggeration, noting that rural health facilities are understaffed, poorly equipped, and unable to provide basic services. The party also rejected talk of a third-term agenda, stating that the effort to impose a successor stems from fear of accountability rather than genuine concern for the state’s future. Democracy requires leadership renewal, not political puppetry. As 2027 nears, Kwarans will judge the APC based on its record, not TV propaganda. The people’s verdict will reflect their lived experiences, and no amount of spin can change that reality. APC must go, the PDP concluded.

In a significant political shift, Bashar Geda, who previously vied for the House of Representatives seat under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, and Bunza Federal Constituency, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State. The announcement was made on Saturday during a well-attended gathering of supporters, party members, and political stakeholders held in Birnin Kebbi.

Addressing the crowd, Geda explained that his decision to switch parties was motivated by his admiration for the governance style and initiatives of Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris. He expressed his commitment to supporting the APC and collaborating with party members in the lead-up to future electoral activities in the state.

“With less than eight months to the general elections, I will remain in Birnin Kebbi to rally support and secure a victory for Governor Idris,” Geda declared. Kayode Oladele, a former acting chairman of the Federal Character Commission and a senior figure in the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on party members to set aside post-primary disputes and focus on building unity ahead of the next general election.

Speaking on Sunday in Abeokuta, Oladele emphasized that the primary election is now history, and the party must rally behind its candidate to secure victory in 2027. He urged members to prioritize collective goals over individual ambitions for the benefit of the party and the people of Ogun State.

The former federal lawmaker, who represented Yewa North/Imeko-Afon, warned that divisive remarks and actions could weaken the party’s prospects. He stressed that discipline, togetherness, and steadfast support for Senator Olamilekan Adeola—the APC governorship candidate—are essential for success.

“The primary is over. The party has made its choice through the votes of its members, producing a candidate with unprecedented support across Ogun State. Our duty now is to close ranks, work together, and guarantee an APC victory. Personal ambitions must yield to the collective good,” he stated.

Oladele noted that the primary result clearly showed overwhelming backing for Adeola, widely known as Yayi. Recall that the party had earlier adopted Yayi as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship race. However, former Ogun State Waste Management Agency boss Abayomi Hunye still purchased nomination forms and contested.

Commenting on Hunye’s participation, Oladele said the aspirant acted on poor advice, lacking the political network, grassroots foundation, and broad acceptance needed for a state-level contest. “Hunye was misguided to join the race without first building a solid political structure. The fact that Senator Adeola garnered massive support even in Hunye’s own ward, Tube, is telling. He was outright rejected there. Politics starts from one’s immediate community. If you can’t win your ward, how can you convince others you have statewide appeal?” Oladele remarked.

According to the election committee chairman, Wale Ohu, Adeola secured 304,055 out of 305,287 accredited votes, while Hunye got none.

Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communication, has expressed concerns about the potential performance of Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. During an interview on Symfoni TV, Bwala shared his apprehensions, suggesting that Obi, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), might secure more votes than Atiku Abubakar.

Bwala, who previously worked under Atiku, highlighted a dual fear: that Obi could either surpass Atiku in vote count or finish as a distant fourth. He warned that if Obi ends up in fourth place, it could tarnish his political legacy, especially as this might be his final electoral attempt. Bwala noted that unlike the 2023 election, where Atiku enjoyed support from numerous governors and legislators, he currently lacks backing from any governor.

Furthermore, Bwala pointed to Atiku’s historical weakness in the North-West region, stating that he has never garnered significant votes from that area. This analysis suggests that Obi’s appeal might resonate more strongly with voters, potentially shifting the electoral landscape.
