Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has warned new manager Xabi Alonso that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is a liability who will cost the team during crucial moments next season. Speaking to BetVictor, Townsend expressed concerns about Sanchez’s reliability under pressure.
Townsend highlighted that while Sanchez has shown some improvement recently, he remains prone to costly errors. “He’ll let you down in a big moment,” said Townsend. “There’s a mistake never too far away.”
Alonso is set to take over at Stamford Bridge in July after signing a four-year contract, following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior. Townsend believes addressing the goalkeeper position should be a priority for the new boss to ensure stability at the back.
