The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has chosen Professor Sadiq Gombe to serve as its National Chairman. This decision was made during the party’s national convention held in Bauchi State on Saturday.
Gombe’s election took place alongside the selection of other members of the National Working Committee, with delegates and party stakeholders from various parts of the country in attendance.
After being sworn into office, the newly elected chairman expressed gratitude to party members for their trust. He promised to lead with transparency and dedication, adhering to the party’s constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
“We assure you of our commitment to the ideals, principles and wellbeing of the party and Nigeria,” Gombe stated.
He emphasized that the SDP intends to present itself as a viable alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party remains focused on tackling national challenges through democratic means.
Usman Bugaje, who chaired the National Convention Committee, noted that the convention highlighted the party’s resolve to build a stronger political movement centered on security, economic growth, and poverty alleviation. He also voiced criticism of current governance, pointing to issues like insecurity, joblessness, and financial strain affecting citizens.
Other officials elected include Deputy National Chairman (South) Sen. Ugochukwu Uba, National Secretary Olu Agunloye, National Treasurer Hajiya Mariam Maggie Batubo, and National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, among others.
