Hon. Philip Agbese, the Labour Party (LP) state leader in Benue and representative for the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has asserted that the Labour Party now stands as the foremost opposition party in Benue State. This declaration comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Agbese made this statement on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, shortly after arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa. Addressing journalists and supporters who gathered to welcome him, the lawmaker expressed strong confidence in the party’s growing influence and shared his personal vision for the future.
“The Labour Party is the largest opposition party in Benue State at this moment,” Agbese said. “The people have clearly indicated where their loyalty lies. I firmly declare that 2027 is in the hands of God’s people.”
This assertion follows recent political shifts across the country that have further consolidated the Labour Party’s position as the leading opposition force in Benue. The LP leader took the opportunity to outline the party’s strategic approach, announcing the adoption of a “quasi-civil, people-oriented” campaign strategy for all forthcoming elections. He emphasized that the party will run on an issue-based platform, steering clear of personal attacks.
“Our campaign will focus on issues, not confrontation,” Agbese explained. “We will refrain from attacking the government or public institutions. Instead, we will be straightforward about what our candidates offer the electorate—real solutions, not propaganda or empty promises.”
He elaborated that this strategy combines civility in political engagement with a strong emphasis on the needs of the people. According to him, the approach will involve extensive consultations, town hall meetings, and the development of practical policy programs tailored to the needs of Benue residents.
Agbese also spoke about his personal aspirations, expressing a determination to build on his achievements in the National Assembly. “We have worked diligently to fulfill our mandate—through legislative interventions and constituency projects that are making a real difference in Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo,” he remarked. “Our goal is to consolidate these gains by ensuring our party delivers even better governance. We will focus on sustainable agriculture, improved infrastructure, quality healthcare, and youth empowerment programs that create tangible opportunities.”
He added that his legislative experience has strengthened his commitment to advocating for policies that address the core challenges facing Benue’s people, especially farmers and rural communities. Agbese promised that LP candidates would prioritize continuity in positive initiatives while introducing innovative solutions to long-standing problems.
“The ‘quasi-civil’ nature of our politics means we will engage respectfully but firmly on issues of accountability and development,” he noted. “The people of Benue deserve leaders who solve problems, not create more division.”
Agbese called on all well-meaning citizens, especially those who believe in good governance, to rally behind the Labour Party. He described 2027 as a defining moment for the state and urged residents to take charge of their destiny through active participation in the electoral process.
