Former Super Eagles head coach Jo Bonfrere has sharply criticized Diego Simeone’s tactical decision to substitute Ademola Lookman during Atletico Madrid’s crucial Champions League semifinal second leg against Arsenal, arguing that the move effectively cost the Spanish side any chance of turning the tie around.
Atletico Madrid entered the match at the Emirates Stadium trailing 1-0 from the first leg, needing a strong performance to advance. Lookman was named in the starting lineup alongside Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez in a three-pronged attack. However, Arsenal struck first through captain Bukayo Saka just before half-time, putting the LaLiga club in an even deeper hole.
With Atletico desperate for an equalizer to stay alive in the competition, Simeone made a surprising substitution in the 57th minute, pulling Lookman off and introducing defender Nahuel Molina. Bonfrere believes this was a grave error that removed the team’s primary source of speed and creativity in the final third.
“I watched the game closely. I am not the Atletico Madrid manager, but when Diego Simeone decided to take Lookman off early in the second half, he effectively stripped the team of its pace,” Bonfrere told Completesports. “Lookman possessed genuine speed and was highly effective in one-on-one duels. But when Simeone opted to substitute him in the 57th minute and bring on players with more physical attributes, I could already sense that Atletico would struggle to break down Arsenal.”
Atletico’s hopes of reaching the Champions League final were extinguished as they suffered a 1-0 defeat on the night, losing 2-1 on aggregate. The result sends Arsenal through to the final, while Atletico are left to rue what might have been if Lookman had remained on the pitch to exploit the spaces behind Arsenal’s defense.
