The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Bauchi Branch, has voiced strong opposition to a proposed gender-based allocation in the appointment of seven High Court judges. The association argues that such a classification violates constitutional provisions and fairness principles.

Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi, NBA chairman Rabiu Garba criticized a public notice by the Bauchi State Judicial Service Commission that reportedly designates five slots for female candidates and two for male candidates. The notice, numbered BAS/JSC/S/APP/3/VOL.III and issued on April 27, 2026, has sparked widespread concern among legal practitioners.

Providing a historical overview, ULM detailed the rotation of the State House of Assembly seat among Uyo’s four clans from 1999 to 2027: Oku Clan has held it twice, Etoi Clan twice, Ikono Clan twice, and Offot Ukwa Clan only once. The specific tenures were listed as: 1999–2003 (Hon. Bar. Aniedi Ndem, Oku Clan), 2003–2007 (Hon. Elder Archibong Inyang, Etoi Clan), 2007–2011 (Hon. Ekere Affia, Ikono Clan), 2011–2015 (Hon. Edwin Joseph, Offot Ukwa Clan), 2015–2019 (Hon. Monday Eyo, Oku Clan), 2019–2023 (Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka, Etoi Clan), and 2023–2027 (Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, Ikono Clan). This pattern, according to ULM, establishes a clear cycle and underscores that Offot Ukwa Clan is still due for a second term, unlike the other clans.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has made it clear that he will not transform Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba, the Abia State College of Education Technical in Arochukwu, or any other state-owned tertiary institution into a full-fledged university.

Speaking in Umuahia on Friday, the governor addressed rumors that the former administration had upgraded three colleges into universities before leaving office. He stated that he was unaware of such conversions and stressed that operating multiple universities puts immense financial and administrative strain on the state.

Otti highlighted that having several universities creates duplication—multiple vice chancellors, registrars, and administrative complexes—which drains resources that could otherwise be channeled into a single, well-funded institution. “I will not be an advocate for multiplying universities when you can properly finance one and make the most of it,” he remarked.

He argued that spreading funding across several universities prevents any one institution from receiving the attention and resources it deserves. Instead, he pointed out that Abia State University in Uturu, together with privately owned universities in the state, can adequately meet the educational needs of citizens.

The governor affirmed that his priority is to ensure adequate financing of existing higher learning institutions while preserving their current status. “I am more focused on funding the schools we have properly rather than creating new ones that may end up underfunded,” Otti concluded.
