The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Sokoto Zone has issued a stark warning about a potential new wave of industrial action across Nigeria’s public universities. The union attributes this looming crisis to the federal government’s persistent failure to honour agreements it signed with the academic body.

During a press briefing held in Sokoto on Thursday, the union’s Zonal Coordinator, Abubakar Sabo, voiced deep frustration over the slow pace of implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. He noted that while the pact was officially endorsed in January 2026, the government has yet to set up the Implementation Monitoring Committee required to oversee its rollout. This delay, Sabo argued, is sowing seeds of discontent and unsettling the academic environment.

“If these issues are not tackled urgently, we risk plunging the university system into an avoidable labour conflict,” Sabo warned. He highlighted that many universities have not adopted the agreed 40% salary increase tied to allowances such as Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances (CATA), Earned Academic Allowances, and Professorial Allowances.

The list of unresolved grievances is extensive. According to ASUU, lecturers are still waiting for arrears linked to the 25–35% salary award, promotion backlogs, salary shortfalls from the IPPIS payment platform, withheld wages from the 2022 strike, and unpaid pensions for retired academics. State-owned universities are not exempt either; the union pointed to unpaid allowances, failure to remit deductions or union dues, missing annual increments, and the absence of governing councils in several institutions.

Beyond bread-and-butter issues, ASUU expressed alarm at the federal government’s plan to establish a Nigerian campus of Coventry University under the Transnational Education framework. The union fears this move could undermine local universities. Additionally, it strongly opposed proposals to phase out certain humanities and social science courses, insisting every discipline plays a vital role in national growth.

The union also raised the alarm over rising insecurity across Northern Nigeria, noting that banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes are disrupting academic activities in numerous institutions. ASUU called on both federal and state authorities to tackle insecurity, poverty, and joblessness, while reiterating the demand for full implementation of all agreements to prevent further turmoil in the education sector.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina to lead the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), succeeding Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose term ends on July 31, 2026. The announcement was made on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Here are essential details about the incoming JAMB registrar:

Professor Aina is a Computer Engineering professor at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife. He is widely recognized as a distinguished academic and systems expert with deep expertise in examination systems, digital infrastructure, and institutional reforms.

His connection with JAMB began during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, where he acquired early exposure to national admissions processes and data management. This experience is believed to have shaped his subsequent contributions to examination reforms and system optimization.

Aina earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, UK. He went on to obtain an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, UK. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

The new JAMB chief has collaborated with major examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and several state education ministries. He brings over 15 years of post-graduation experience to the role.

Turning 40 in July, Professor Aina has been celebrated as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Presidential hopeful Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the government to act with resolve in the fight against terrorism to safeguard educational institutions and the broader community. During a visit to Practicing Nursery and Primary School in Agulu, Anambra State, on Thursday, Obi emphasized that improving education quality is critical for national development.

When asked about addressing school insecurity following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, Obi stated that success hinges on the decisiveness and political will of those in power. He said, “We must secure not just our schools but the entire society. Being decisive is key. During my tenure in government, we ensured safety in Anambra through strong will and determination. The same approach is needed to defeat terrorists.”

A Nigerian police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Newton Isokpehi, has sparked public outrage after a video emerged showing him threatening citizens who film police during operations. In the now-deleted TikTok clip, he warned that anyone caught recording him while on duty would be shot. He stated he would remove everyone in the area if people filmed him, demanding that those recording should be stopped by their superiors.

The comments were widely condemned by rights activists and the public, who described them as illegal and dangerous. Human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu called for disciplinary action, and many Nigerians urged police authorities to remove the officer from duty.

Following the backlash, Isokpehi apologized, acknowledging that citizens have the constitutional right to record police while they work. He explained that his outburst was fueled by frustration due to distractions during operations, adding that he had previously survived a bullet wound and faced poor welfare conditions within the force.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that administrative measures are already being taken regarding the incident.

Lauretta Onochie, who previously worked as a media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after his appearance before the African Democratic Congress (ADC) screening committee.

In a statement she released and titled ‘Atiku Abubakar Done and Dusted,’ Onochie praised the ex-VP as a leader who is easy to approach and suitable for governing a country as varied as Nigeria.

She remarked that Atiku’s political journey is intricately linked to Nigeria’s story, serving as a link across different regions, cultures, beliefs, and hopes. Over time, he has forged connections with various ethnic groups in the nation.

Onochie highlighted Atiku’s tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 alongside Olusegun Obasanjo, calling it one of the most inclusive political partnerships, with northern and southern leaders collaborating during a democratic transition.

According to Onochie, Atiku is known for advocating market-driven economic changes, but he consistently stresses that economic growth must also benefit farmers in the North, traders in the East, entrepreneurs in the West, and oil-producing communities in the South-South.

Although he hails from Adamawa State, Atiku has cultivated a pan-Nigerian identity, speaking multiple northern languages and maintaining connections across Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Tiv, Nupe, Anioma, Kanuri, Urhobo, and many other groups.

His multiple presidential bids have made resilience a hallmark of his political persona. Supporters from various ethnic and religious backgrounds view this persistence as a sign of dedication to democratic processes rather than a sense of entitlement.

Onochie noted that his business ventures in logistics, farming, and energy have linked him with producers, transporters, industrialists, and laborers throughout Nigeria’s varied economic sectors.

Atiku frequently argues that the government should enable enterprise rather than dominate it—a philosophy that resonates with the trading mindset of the Southeast, the commercial energy of the Southwest, and the agricultural foundation of the North.

Supporters often mention his investments in education and youth as evidence that he regards Nigeria’s greatest asset as its people, not oil or politics, across all ethnicities and areas.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has given a firm commitment that all legitimate votes cast in the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election will be respected and counted. He made this declaration during a pre-election visit to the state, alongside National Commissioners, where he also officially handed over the voters’ register to the participating political parties.

Professor Amupitan highlighted that the gathering marked a significant milestone for INEC, noting that it is rare for the entire INEC leadership to be present in Ekiti for such an event. He emphasized that the presentation of the register is a statutory requirement under the Electoral Act, which mandates its publication and release to parties at least 30 days before the election date.

According to the Chairman, the commission has already completed seven out of nine major activities outlined in the election timetable. He noted that political campaigns are scheduled to end on June 18, two days before the election. Describing the voters’ register as the bedrock of any credible election, Amupitan explained that it was developed through meticulous data collection, thorough verification, and exhaustive cleaning processes.

Providing specific figures, he revealed that the number of registered voters in Ekiti has risen substantially due to the Continuous Voter Registration exercise. “We previously had about 900,000 registered voters, but that number has now increased to approximately 1,059,360,” he stated.

Amupitan called on political parties and citizens to collaborate with INEC to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process. “Conducting free, credible, and transparent elections is our responsibility, but we cannot achieve it alone. It requires collective effort,” he said. He reiterated his assurance directly to the people, stating, “I want to reassure you that your vote will count.”

Taking a strong stance against electoral malpractice, the INEC Chairman warned against vote buying and vote trading, labeling them as grave threats to Nigeria’s democracy. He stressed that such actions are criminal offenses under the Electoral Act and urged law enforcement agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the Police, to arrest and prosecute offenders.

In his own remarks, the Ekiti Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, appealed to political parties, candidates, and their supporters to maintain peace throughout the election period. He encouraged parties to make constructive and lawful use of the voters’ register in their preparations for the election.

Obinna Randy Ukanwoko, a contender for the House of Representatives seat representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in Abia State, has voiced strong objections to the outcome of the recent APC primary election. He labeled the results announced by the party’s National Assembly Primary Election Committee as fraudulent and a betrayal of democratic principles.

Ukanwoko expressed frustration over the demolition of his hotel in Umuahia by the Abia State Government in November 2025, which he attributed to his affiliation with the APC. He claimed the hotel was razed after hosting a party event, causing him to lose 898 law books among other belongings.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, the aspirant highlighted that the primary election was not conducted in many parts of the constituency, yet a winner was declared. He refuted suggestions that he had withdrawn in favor of another candidate, insisting on a formal election process to gauge candidates’ popularity.

Ukanwoko criticized the party for failing to uphold its promises of fairness and transparency. He also reported that Dan Umeh, the APC chairman for Ward 3, was assaulted by thugs for opposing the manipulation of results.

In response, the Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, stated that the issue has been escalated to the party’s appeal committee and declined further comment.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has strongly criticized Senator Garba Musa Maidoki for what it considers inflammatory remarks aimed at stirring public unrest. The party’s leadership issued a statement condemning comments the senator reportedly made during a rally in Zuru, where he allegedly attacked both the state government and the Zuru Emirate Council.

Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Kana Zuru, the APC State Chairman, signed the statement describing Maidoki’s words as reckless and driven by political frustration. The party specifically denounced the senator’s criticism of Governor Nasir Idris and Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami Gomo III. According to the APC, these actions stem from Maidoki’s dissatisfaction with his political circumstances.

The party dismissed any notion of internal discord, asserting that the Kebbi APC remains cohesive under Governor Idris’s leadership. It emphasized that the senator’s resignation from the party was based on baseless claims of disagreements. The APC also defended the Emir, calling him a nonpartisan traditional leader who unites people across political and religious lines.

Furthermore, the party urged Maidoki to accept personal responsibility for his political setbacks instead of blaming the government, the party, or the emirate. It noted that constituents in Kebbi South have the right to choose representatives who can effectively serve their interests.

Recall that Maidoki resigned from the APC on May 14, 2026, in a letter to the party’s ward chairman in Rafin Zuru Ward. His resignation came a day before the party’s senatorial primaries, citing internal crises that he claimed hindered his political ambitions.

The Shehu Gabam-led faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken the decisive step of expelling the party’s former presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, along with twelve other prominent members. This announcement came during the faction’s National Convention and Presidential Primary held in Abuja on Wednesday.

During the convention, delegates who remain loyal to Gabam also endorsed Lagos-based entrepreneur Abimbola Atanda as the party’s new sole presidential candidate through a voice vote, solidifying their choice for the upcoming elections.

Among those shown the door are key figures including factional National Chairman Sadiq Gombe, National Secretary Olu Agunloye, and National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba. The list of expelled individuals extends to Joseph Abu, Maggie Batubo, Sa’adatu Abdullahi, Abimbola Aderemi, Oguchukwu Uba, Huseesini Bello, Alabi Lekan, Rosemary Effiong, and Abubakar Modibo.

In a swift move, the convention also dissolved the National Working Committee entirely before proceeding to elect a fresh set of national officers, again using a voice vote to confirm the new leadership.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Warri South-West Constituency officially endorsed the incumbent Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Dennis Guwor, as its sole candidate for the upcoming 2027 elections. Delegates from the ten wards cast their votes locally to confirm Guwor ahead of the general polls.

Supervised by the local government returning officer, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, and other party officials, the exercise proceeded smoothly. Guwor cast his ballot at Gbaramatu Ward 4 before joining party leaders at the collation center in Ogbe-Ijoh. Notable figures present included Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, Commissioner Sam Oligida, Hon. Daniel Mayuku, and Bosin Ebikeme.

After results from all wards were tallied and announced, the Speaker expressed gratitude. “This affirmation is not about one man, but about the will of our people and the unity of our party. I am humbled by the trust reposed in me by the party in Warri South-West,” he stated. “It is a call for more service with greater dedication, humility, and accountability. Our focus remains on delivering dividends of democracy to every community in this constituency.”

Guwor, who also chairs the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, described the outcome as a reflection of the APC’s strength in Delta State. “What we are witnessing today is the consolidation of a political family that puts people first,” he added. “The APC in Warri South-West is united, and we are ready to secure a resounding victory for the party in 2027. This is about continuity, stability, and development for our people.”

Party stakeholders praised the peaceful and orderly nature of the exercise, commending the leadership for aiming to secure 100% votes for APC candidates in 2027. However, tensions arose in Ekurede-Ugbori-Ugbuwangue Ward at Ogiame Primary School, where the primary was stalled due to demands for the original result sheet. Prospective voters, citing irregularities during the senatorial primary on Monday, refused to allow a repeat. They alleged that plain paper was used to record votes, only for the party leadership to later display results on official APC sheets with different figures.

The presiding officer and an INEC official had to be escorted from the venue by community leaders after the incident. Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema’s agent, Mr. Tuoyo Ofuyaekpone, declared that the House of Assembly primary in that ward did not take place because they resisted what they called an attempt to manipulate the process in favor of another aspirant, Dr. Augustine Uroye.

In Isoko North Local Government Area, the APC conducted a peaceful primary on Wednesday. Engr. Orobosa Ashakah emerged as the party’s candidate for the Isoko North Constituency seat. The Local Government Returning Officer, Hon. Chika Awunzia, officially declared Ashakah the winner after collating results from all 13 wards. Awunzia noted the exercise was orderly and successful, reflecting the party’s commitment to internal democracy. INEC officials, journalists, and observers also affirmed the peaceful atmosphere.

Ashakah, speaking to journalists after his emergence, thanked party leaders, supporters, and stakeholders. “I want to sincerely thank our party leaders for their continuous support and encouragement, as well as everyone who has contributed to my growth and success,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. “I thank God for making today possible, and I promise not to disappoint those who believe in me. By the grace of God, I will continue to do my best and make everyone proud.” Observers commended the unity and cooperation among party members in Isoko North.

Meanwhile, in Oshimili South Constituency, a large turnout of party faithful gathered at Ugbomanta Ward 8 to affirm the incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, as the sole APC candidate. Anyafulu described the direct primary as transparent and inclusive. “The overwhelming support from party members reflects the confidence and acceptance I enjoy among my constituents,” she said. She praised the leadership for reducing financial pressure on aspirants and allowing ordinary members to freely choose their candidate. Anyafulu assured constituents that lessons from her first term would enable improved representation. “Governance is a continuous learning process that requires constant interaction with the people,” she stressed. She also expressed delight at the massive turnout, calling it evidence of her strong grassroots connection.
