The All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries for the House of Representatives in Lagos State faced major disruptions on Saturday as electoral materials and personnel arrived late across multiple locations. In areas like Oshodi/Isolo and Surulere, party members gathered early but were forced to wait for hours before accreditation and voting could start.

At Ejigbo Ward F5 and Isolo Ward F1 in Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency, delays were notable despite a strong turnout. Voting had not begun by 11:30 a.m. at Ward F5, while Ward F1 in Isolo was still stalled at 12:20 p.m. One party member, Salau Samson, expressed frustration after waiting since morning with no progress, noting that many had left angrily.

Olanrewaju Akinbowale, the Director-General of an aspirant, explained that the exercise was initially scheduled for 8 a.m. though he avoided speculating on the reasons for the delay. He stressed that members were still willing to wait. Habeeb Anibaba, an APC chieftain in Ejigbo, suggested that party leaders might be resolving issues but remained hopeful for improved turnout once voting began.

At Ward F1 in Isolo, a journalist observed low attendance, with no officials or materials on site, though security was present. Similar issues occurred in Surulere Federal Constituency I, where multiple wards experienced long waits. Ruth Adewale, a voter at Ward G, described the situation as disappointing, with many members leaving.

At Adeniran Ogunsanya Ward G2, Ward Chairman Alhaja Bilikis Aremu urged patience, citing logistical challenges. She noted the ward is the political base of Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President. Other affected wards included Iponri, Gbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana, Yaba/Ojuelegba, and Akinhanmi Cole. In Shitta/Ogunlana, Ward Chairman Laide Aina confirmed officials had not arrived. Meanwhile, Bayo Gafarr, Ward Chairman for Akinhanmi Cole, reported that accreditation concluded by 12:20 p.m.

Earlier, Saleh Yipmong, Chairman of the APC House of Representatives Primary Election Committee in Lagos, urged electoral officers to ensure transparency and fairness. At the APC Secretariat in Ikeja, he warned against actions that could harm the party’s reputation. Across several locations, officials and agents waited for materials and personnel to arrive before proceedings could begin.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced deep concern over the country’s worsening security situation, cautioning that many Nigerians are beginning to treat killings and destruction as routine events. Speaking on Saturday during the 13th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Abuja at St James Anglican Church, Asokoro, Jonathan called for a national moral reawakening.

He observed that the escalation of violence and devastation has eroded the nation’s collective humanity. “More troubling is how society sometimes accepts these calamities as if they were everyday occurrences,” he stated. “In the past, such tragedies would jolt the national conscience. Now, people are killed, communities are ravaged, and life goes on as if nothing happened. That should not be the case.”

The former president warned that Nigeria is experiencing a steady loss of ethical values. He identified insecurity, moral decay, and devaluation of human life as major threats. “When we examine the current state of our nation, it’s easy to feel disheartened. Violence, instability, and the erosion of human values have become alarming realities,” he added.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to reembrace strong moral principles and called on leaders to demonstrate integrity and courage in tackling the country’s problems. He also highlighted the church’s vital role in shaping society, encouraging religious leaders to continue speaking truthfully and promoting righteousness. “The church must remain the moral compass of society, upholding truth, defending justice, and steering people toward better values,” he said.

He stressed the importance of focused leadership, noting that progress is only possible when those in power act with honesty and a clear vision. The former president appealed to Nigerians to stay hopeful and collaborate for peace, justice, and national development.

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the deaths of 17 of its officers following a terrorist assault on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School located in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State. The attack occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026.

According to a statement issued by DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Public Relations Officer, the officers were participating in specialized operational training at the institution when the attack began around 1:15 a.m. The terrorists launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions.

The statement also noted that several brave personnel from the Nigerian Army lost their lives while valiantly defending the facility against the attackers.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, praised the fallen officers as courageous and dedicated individuals who showed exceptional patriotism and commitment to national security by taking part in advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training programs. He extended the condolences of the entire Force to the families of the deceased, assuring them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

In a show of solidarity, the Commissioner of Police for Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the school on behalf of the IGP. During the visit, he expressed sympathy to the Commandant of the school, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, as well as to Nigerian Army officers and the surviving police personnel still undergoing training at the facility.

Commending the resilience and bravery of the survivors, CP Jibrin urged them to remain steadfast and complete their training in honor of their fallen colleagues.

The IGP assured the public that the police, in close collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, will continue efforts to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice.

The Office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has categorically refuted claims made in a recent report by TrackNG regarding the construction and equipping of a modern conference and e-learning facility at Bende Secondary Grammar School in Abia State, a project included in the 2024 federal budget.

In an official statement released by Udora Orizu, Special Assistant on Press Affairs to the Deputy Speaker, the office emphasized that the role of legislators is limited to initiating and attracting development projects to their constituencies. The actual implementation and oversight of such projects rest solely with the executive branch and its designated agencies.

The statement further noted that while the office typically avoids responding to such publications, it felt compelled to address the issue to prevent public misinformation. It described the use of the Deputy Speaker’s image in connection with the project as both curious and mischievous, given that he holds no responsibility for its execution or supervision.

The office urged the relevant procuring agency to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter and ensure that the contractor awarded the project is held accountable according to the law. Its primary concern, the statement added, is the successful completion and delivery of the project for the benefit of the constituency’s residents.

A tragic incident occurred in Abuja on Saturday when a three-story building under construction collapsed at Durumi, Area 3, near Gudu Market. The disaster claimed the lives of five individuals, while one person was rescued from the debris.

According to reports, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary for Health, Dolapo Fasawe, was present at the scene and personally attended to the only survivor before he was taken to a medical facility. The suspect, identified as Saidu Rabiu, a 25-year-old resident of Wagini in Batsari Local Government Area, Katsina State, was taken into custody on May 15, 2026, at approximately 10:20 a.m.

According to a statement released by Zagazola Makama, a renowned counter-insurgency and security analyst focusing on the Lake Chad region, the arrest was carried out by troops from the 17 Brigade under Operation FANSAN YANMA. The leadership of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), has vowed to intensify security measures for crucial national programs in Taraba State. Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, the brigade commander, made this known during separate meetings with representatives from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held at the brigade’s base in Jalingo on a Friday.

Mr. Agunbiade Oladele, the Taraba State branch controller of WAEC, headed the council’s delegation. He explained that their visit aimed to bolster collaboration with the army to guarantee a safe environment for ongoing examinations throughout the region. Oladele highlighted that a stronger military presence at test venues would shield students, invigilators, and sensitive documents from potential risks, particularly in high-risk zones.

In response, General Akaliro confirmed that the brigade would deliver the required security coverage for the entire examination season. He underscored that protecting candidates and preserving the credibility of the assessment process are paramount concerns for the army. The commander also stated that troops would be stationed at designated examination centers as needed, urging WAEC staff, students, and the public to assist security forces and report any unusual activities without delay.

Separately, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Taraba, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, led another team to the brigade headquarters to request military assistance and enhance inter-agency collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections. Dr. Idris noted that the visit was meant to foster deeper ties between INEC and security bodies, which he called essential for achieving peaceful, honest, and open polls in the state.

Lagos stakeholders are urging the government to implement more stringent policies to curb lead poisoning and reduce toxic exposure across the state. This came to light during a three-day workshop organized by Resolve to Save Lives (RSTL) in collaboration with the Lagos State Government. The event brought together experts from health, environment, consumer protection, and water management sectors to craft strategies against lead contamination in consumer goods, water systems, and the environment.

Dr. Nanlop Ogbureke, Executive Director of Resolve to Save Lives, noted that the initiative aims to help Lagos develop a roadmap to phase out lead from cosmetics and other products. She described lead poisoning as a critical public health issue due to its severe impact on children, pregnant women, and adults. She highlighted that exposure arises from mining, agriculture, polluted water, and industrial waste, warning that even low levels can cause permanent harm to children’s brain development and cardiovascular health.

Ogbureke emphasized that multiple lead poisoning cases have been reported across Nigeria, necessitating stronger prevention and public education. She stated that the project will gather national data to advocate for stricter regulations. “The government must create awareness and enforce rules, while individuals and industries must prevent contamination,” she added.

Special Adviser to the Lagos Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the workshop as evidence of the state’s dedication to protecting residents through science-based policies. She noted that contaminated consumer goods, unsafe industrial practices, informal recycling, and adulterated cosmetics pose serious health risks. Ogunyemi said the most vulnerable groups are children and women of childbearing age, who suffer developmental disorders and long-term health issues from lead exposure. She recalled that Resolve to Save Lives launched its lead prevention program in Nigeria in May 2025, with Lagos as one of four pilot states alongside Kano, Kwara, and Nasarawa.

Dr. Olajumoke Oyenuga, Director of Health Planning at the Lagos Ministry of Health, said the workshop aimed to localize the national strategic plan for lead prevention. “By the end, Lagos will have a document guiding stakeholders on effective lead control,” she explained. The General Manager of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, Afolabi Solebo, warned that no level of lead exposure is safe. He identified imported cosmetics, traditional medicines, contaminated food, industrial emissions, old plumbing, and lead-based paints as major sources. He also highlighted risks from unregulated battery recycling, e-waste processing, and illegal smelting in areas like Ikorodu, Alaba, and Ajegunle. Solebo stressed that poor awareness worsens the problem and announced intensified enforcement of safety standards and public sensitization campaigns.

The General Manager of the Lagos Waste Water Management Office, Adeyemi Afolabi, urged action to prevent lead from entering waterways, calling it a severe environmental and economic issue requiring cooperation among government, industries, and residents.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a change of plans for its screening of presidential and governorship aspirants. Originally slated for this weekend, the exercise has now been moved to Monday, 18th May 2026, according to a statement from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

In light of security concerns in parts of Northern Nigeria, the party has also decided to relocate the screening for federal lawmaker aspirants from affected areas to Abuja. All impacted aspirants will be notified of the new schedule and relevant details via direct communication.

The ADC expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the adjustment and thanked all aspirants and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation.
