Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has outlined the key transfer priorities for incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. The Spanish coach has agreed to a four-year deal to take over at Stamford Bridge from July 1, replacing Liam Rosenior who lasted just 106 days after Enzo Maresca was sacked in January.
Chelsea’s season has been disappointing, with a 10th-place Premier League standing and an FA Cup final loss to Manchester City. Despite a recent victory over Liverpool ending a six-match losing streak, Champions League qualification is out of reach with only two games left.
Neville, speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, criticized Chelsea’s transfer policy of signing only young players on long contracts. He argued that the squad lacks experience across all areas and called for a change in approach. ‘Signing exclusively young players is a big mistake,’ he said. ‘They need a mix of youth and experience.’
The pundit identified four priority positions: a new goalkeeper, a center-back, and an experienced center-forward. While he praised Chelsea’s midfield options including Caicedo, Fernandez, and Lavia, he stressed the need for a ‘top-tier’ striker with strength and class. He also mentioned Joao Pedro and Liam Delap as potential options but emphasized the requirement for a proven goalscorer.
Chelsea face Tottenham on Tuesday, with a win potentially moving them above Brentford into eighth place, securing Europa Conference League football. The upcoming summer window will be crucial for Alonso to reshape the squad according to Neville’s recommendations.
