Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin has publicly supported Vitalik Buterin’s decision to write a science fiction novel about decentralized governance, arguing that fiction can communicate Ethereum’s core values to a wider audience. In a recent post on X, Lubin described Buterin as an enormously effective communicator and the most important steward of the Ethereum ecosystem, emphasizing that shifting focus to a novel does not mean stepping away from the project.
Lubin urged critics to reconsider, stating that those who believe Buterin isn’t furthering Ethereum’s growth by writing fiction are missing the point. He suggested that a cypherpunk story could illustrate how people navigate a dystopian digital world using Ethereum-based technology, comparing the potential impact to works like Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother series. The novel, according to Lubin, aligns perfectly with Ethereum’s themes of open source, privacy, censorship resistance, and credible neutrality.
Buterin had announced in May that he would pause his regular long-form essays to write a science fiction novel focusing on decentralized governance. He has already completed the first two chapters, which explore concepts such as quadratic voting, AI-assisted decision-making, and the limitations of DAOs. This shift has sparked mixed reactions, as his technical essays often shape public discourse around Ethereum. Some question the timing amid price weakness and calls for clearer direction from the Ethereum Foundation, while others believe the novel could make complex governance ideas more accessible.
Privacy remains a recurring theme in Ethereum discussions, with builders developing privacy tools ahead of the network’s 10th anniversary. Buterin has previously urged developers to focus on private money, identity, voting, and messaging. The novel incorporates these themes, with early chapters mentioning a Veridian Privacy Robe, which some community members see as a potential symbol for solidarity around privacy.
Lubin’s defense positions Buterin’s fiction as part of Ethereum’s broader communication strategy, not a distraction.
