Nacho Monreal, the former Arsenal full-back, has expressed reservations about the Gunners pursuing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. The Spaniard believes that acquiring the Italian international might necessitate the departure of either Martin Zubimendi or Declan Rice.
Monreal, who spent several years at Arsenal, lauded Zubimendi and Rice as the premier defensive midfielders globally. He suggested that the club already possesses elite talent in that position and adding Tonali could create an imbalance.
In an interview with Rekatochklart, Monreal stated: “Arsenal would be getting a world-class midfielder if they sign Tonali. However, they invested significantly in Zubimendi last season, making a move complicated. Having all three—Tonali, Zubimendi, and Rice—would be excessive. Therefore, I envision them offloading either Zubimendi or Declan Rice to make room for Tonali.”
The former defender emphasized that Arsenal currently boasts the two best defensive midfielders in the world, implying that a new signing in that area is unnecessary. His comments come amid ongoing speculation linking Tonali with a move away from St. James’ Park this summer.
