Ikenna Azomchine, a prominent figure within the Obidient political movement, has called on Nigerians to reconsider offering unconditional support to any presidential contender. Speaking during an interview on Trust TV’s political program, Azomchine stressed the importance of critical evaluation over emotional loyalty.
Having previously backed Peter Obi’s presidential bid, Azomchine disclosed his decision to step back and reexamine his political associations ahead of the 2027 elections. He clarified that although he has distanced himself from Obi, he does not endorse the harsh criticisms voiced by actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo.
Azomchine expressed frustration with Obi’s inability to articulate a clear strategy for winning the next presidential race. Despite multiple attempts to engage Obi on this matter, the former Anambra governor—now the candidate for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)—failed to provide a convincing plan. Azomchine warned that movements like the Obidient cannot thrive on sentiment alone without a concrete roadmap to power.
He hinted at the possibility of redirecting support toward President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid while still hoping Obi contributes meaningful ideas for national progress. Azomchine emphasized that his primary objective remains identifying a platform capable of delivering substantial economic reforms and good governance.
“We cannot waste the efforts of millions who expect tangible results, not another round of avoidable defeats,” Azomchine stated. He called on opposition leaders to shift from rhetoric to actionable strategies if they wish to stay relevant in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
