Pep Guardiola, the former Manchester City manager, has shed light on the reasons behind Barcelona’s inability to win the Champions League since 2015. The Catalan club last secured the trophy by defeating Juventus 3-1 in the final that year. Guardiola, who led Barcelona to two Champions League titles during his tenure, emphasized that an obsession with the competition can be detrimental.
He stated that the Champions League has the potential to dismantle projects and expressed hope that Barcelona avoids that fate. According to Guardiola, it is a mistake to assume that a club’s progress is worthless simply because it does not win the tournament. He highlighted that domestic league success reflects consistency and stability, while the Champions League requires teams to reach the knockout stages in optimal form, without key injuries, and also depends heavily on officiating.
