Chelsea icon Petr Cech has urged the Blues to rethink their transfer strategy if they hope to challenge for the Premier League or Champions League again. The west London side has already fallen out of the domestic title race this term, and their spot in next season’s Champions League is far from secure—they currently sit ninth in the table.
In an interview with The Athletic, the former goalkeeper insisted that a squad built exclusively on young talents rarely achieves sustained success. “You have to decide what you want to achieve,” Cech explained. “Young, gifted players can win occasionally, but it’s uncommon to do so consistently. If your aim is to compete every year, a pure youth policy won’t work.”
Cech emphasized that winning either the Premier League or the Champions League demands a different approach. “You must change your philosophy. These competitions are extremely demanding. You need a strong core of seasoned players, then you can blend in promising youngsters who will grow faster under the guidance of experienced teammates. Those veterans will help them navigate tough moments.”
The current Chelsea roster features only one player over 28—Tosin Adarabioyo—and he has not been a regular starter. This lack of senior figures, Cech implied, may be a key factor holding the club back from silverware.
