The Nigerian film industry and academia are in deep sorrow following the death of renowned actor and scholar, Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, commonly known as Professor Kola Oyewo, at the age of 80.
His son, Adetoyese Oyewo, broke the news on Facebook on Friday, honoring his father’s legacy and life. In the tribute, Adetoyese portrayed his father as a man embodying love, wisdom, strength, and kindness, and expressed profound grief over the loss.
Adetoyese wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father.” He noted that while the family mourns, they are thankful for the extraordinary life Professor Oyewo lived and the positive influence he had on many. He added that the actor’s legacy would persist through the cherished memories of family, friends, colleagues, and admirers his life impacted.
The son also requested prayers and support for the family during this difficult time, emphasizing that they are celebrating a life devoted to service, education, and the arts.
Professor Oyewo was a towering figure in Nigerian theatre and performing arts, admired both as a skilled actor and an academician. Over many decades, he played a pivotal role in the growth and preservation of Yoruba theatre, while also advancing Nigerian culture via his performances on stage, screen, and in the classroom. His career encompassed acting, teaching, and cultural activism, making him a key voice in the evolution of theatre arts in Nigeria.
