NEAR Protocol has staked its future on a bold premise: autonomous AI agents will dominate crypto transactions, and they will require a blockchain capable of handling their high-speed, high-volume activities. This vision goes beyond vague AI marketing, targeting a concrete future where AI agents autonomously buy compute, process payments, label data, and execute trades—all at machine velocity. Such agents would generate transaction bursts that could cripple conventional blockchains, prompting NEAR to redesign its infrastructure specifically for this load.

The centerpiece of this bet arrives in June 2026 with a major upgrade called dynamic resharding. Sharding already splits the blockchain into parallel shards to boost throughput, but manual addition of shards was a slow, governance-heavy process. Dynamic resharding removes this bottleneck by automatically splitting overloaded shards in real time, scaling capacity instantly without human oversight. This ensures that when a swarm of agents triggers a surge, the network expands seamlessly, keeping fees low and confirmations fast—critical for AI-driven commerce.

Beyond scaling, NEAR has assembled complementary tools to support the agent economy. The Intents cross-chain settlement system allows agents to specify desired outcomes, while solvers orchestrate optimal paths across multiple blockchains. This abstraction simplifies multi-chain operations, making it practical for agents to buy compute on one chain, settle payments on another, and store data on a third. The system has already processed significant volumes, generating millions in fees and settling transactions across dozens of chains. Privacy tools further strengthen the ecosystem, offering confidential treasuries and private transaction capabilities essential for enterprise and agent interactions.

Tokenomics reinforce the investment case by linking usage to token value. NEAR reduced its inflation rate to lower dilution and activated a fee buyback mechanism: fees from Intents transactions are used to purchase NEAR tokens on the open market. This creates a feedback loop where growth in agent activity directly drives token demand. The structure is elegant but depends entirely on sustained network usage.

Yet, a glaring complication emerges from on-chain data. Despite NEAR’s soaring price and compelling narrative, daily active users plummeted from nearly 3 million earlier in 2026 to a fraction of that level. This disconnect between price action and usage signals that the AI agent economy has not materialized at scale on NEAR. Part of the price rally stems from short squeezes and narrative momentum rather than fundamental adoption. The bet remains credible but unproven—a wager on a future that has yet to arrive.

To weigh the opportunity, consider both sides. On one hand, NEAR offers a plausible vision, technically sound infrastructure, a skilled team with deep AI expertise, and tokenomics aligned with usage. On the other hand, the thesis awaits validation, usage trends are negative, and competitors are also pursuing scalability and AI use cases. The prudent approach is to monitor real metrics—daily active users, transaction fees, and agent-specific activity—rather than price movements. These indicators will reveal whether the narrative is transforming into reality or remaining a speculative story.
